Firefighters contained a 50-acre grass fire in San Ramon Thursday evening, according to the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.

The fire, between Dougherty and Lawrence roads, was reported at 5:15 p.m., fire Chief Richard Price said.

San Ramon Valley and Cal Fire crews responded to the fire, attacking it with drops from two airplanes and multiple bucket drops from
helicopters.

The fire was contained in about an hour, and firefighters expected to have the fire under control by about 10 p.m., Price said.

Some structures were threatened by the blaze, but ultimately none were damaged by the long, wind-driven fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

With the Fourth of July holiday coming up next week, Price said that he is urging residents to clear brush from behind their homes to protect
against vegetation fires.

He said that defensible space behind homes can make a big difference in protecting from fires. He also said that residents should not be using fireworks, and that they are illegal throughout Contra Costa County.

"It's hot, dry, windy, not conditions where we want fireworks," Price said.
