Bad penmanship played a role in the arrest of a would-be bank robber in Antioch on Monday.
At about 9:45 a.m. a man entered the Wells Fargo Bank in the 2600 block of Somerville Road, police said. The suspect approached a bank teller without saying anything and produced an apparently illegible handwritten note, according to police.
Police said the teller was unable to read the note due to the poor handwriting and contacted her manager to assist her.
While the teller consulted with her manager, the suspect left the bank through the back door, according to police.
Eventually the bank staff determined that the suspect was attempting to rob the bank and contacted police.
Officers later received a call reporting an unwanted guest at Somersville Towne Center in the 2500 block of Somersville Road.
Police at the scene found 29-year-old Jamal Garrett who matched the description of the man who attempted to rob the bank.
Witnesses from the Wells Fargo branch in the robbery attempt were contacted and identified Garrett as the suspect, police said.
Garrett was arrested for attempting to rob the bank along with an outstanding warrant for parole violations, according to police.
