Cal High QB honored as San Ramon Valley's best

California High senior quarterback Cameron Owen was recently recognized as the San Ramon Valley's top high school football player in 2013, receiving the Danville Rotary Club's annual Pete Villa Award at a ceremony last month.

Danville resident to plead guilty in public auction scheme

A Danville resident and two other Contra Costa County real estate investors have accepted plea deals for conspiring to commit mail fraud and rig bids at public foreclosure auctions, according to federal authorities.

Fireworks could be returning to San Ramon

Are fireworks coming back to San Ramon? It's too soon to say for sure, but the city is taking the first steps toward restoring the show. After two years and multiple public input sessions, the San Ramon Parks & Community Services Commission will hold two public meetings on potential new locations for the fireworks to be set off.

Bank robber foiled by bad handwriting

Bad penmanship played a role in the arrest of a would-be bank robber in Antioch on Monday. At about 9:45 a.m. a man entered the Wells Fargo Bank in the 2600 block of Somerville Road, police said. The suspect approached a bank teller without saying anything and produced an apparently illegible handwritten note, according to police.

Four busted in multi-county mail theft ring

A call from an alert Tri-Valley resident led to the arrest of four men in a mail-theft ring that spanned four counties, including cities in both Contra Costa and Alameda counties.

BART riders to see increase in parking rates

Not only will it cost more to ride BART, but it's going to cost more at park at local BART stations later this month. On Jan 27, parking rates will go from $1.50 to $2 at the Dublin/Pleasanton and West Dublin stations. They'll also go to $2 at Castro Valley, El Cerrito Del Norte, El Cerrito Plaza, North Berkeley, Ashby and MacArthur station.

Senior fraud part III: Double check when getting an estimate

Beyond large-scale thefts from seniors, they're being targeted by everyone from unscrupulous mechanics to contractors to people selling fraudulent health insurance policies. State officials say mechanics may claim a car is unsafe to push for costly, unneeded repairs.

Drought conditions expected to continue through March

San Ramon received the lowest rainfall in recent years, with just 3.41 inches recorded at the nearest weather station in Dublin during 2013, and 1.59 inches since October, the start of the rainy season. Mark Strudley, a hydrologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who studies rainfall and flooding, said the area is stuck between el Nino and la Nina conditions.

Senior fraud series part II: Beware of telephone and email scams

By far, the most common way of separating seniors from their money is through the telephone, in cons ranging from the grandparent scam to the Jamaican Lottery scam. The grandparent scam started showing up in the area a few years ago, and a number of local residents have fallen victim.

26th "Winter Spare the Air" Day called for Friday

The Bay Area is experiencing a winter with some of the worst air quality in years as a fourth consecutive "Winter Spare the Air" day was announced for Friday. That will mark the 26th day this season that an alert has been issued by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which is banning wood burning in the region because of poor air quality.

Overnight lane closures scheduled on San Ramon Valley Boulevard

Drivers can expect slower traffic conditions along San Ramon Valley Boulevard in southern Danville overnight today (Jan. 2) and Friday (Jan. 3) due to construction on the Caltrans soundwall project.

BART board approves union contract on 8-1 vote

BART directors voted 8-1 today to approve a tentative agreement that could end nine months of labor strife with the agency's employee unions. Shortly before voting in favor of the pact Thursday morning, BART director Robert Raburn said, "We've had nine months of gestation and I'm looking forward to this having a healthy effect because we need to have a good relationship with our workers."

Another Spare the Air day called

A Bay Area wood-burning ban that continued into the New Year will remain in effect on Thursday, officials from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said. Thursday will be the region's third consecutive "Winter Spare the Air" day this week, prompted by an ongoing cold, dry weather conditions that trap harmful air pollutants close to the ground, according to the air district.

A Danville woman was arrested in Pleasanton just after midnight Sunday on felony and misdemeanor counts after reportedly being so intoxicated she didn't know what city she was in, according to police.

South Bay baby first born in 2014

A baby girl born in the South Bay appears to be the first baby born in the Bay Area in 2014, a hospital spokesman said. The baby girl was born two seconds past midnight at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center, spokesman Karl Sonkin said.

A trail-blazer with Special Olympics, the Boy Scouts, and a host of Tri-Valley activities ranging from blood drives to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Mano serves the community at a hectic pace as well as his "day job" as a business analyst for Kaiser Permanente in Pleasanton.

A renowned spiritual leader with a San Ramon connection is raising money to help typhoon victims in the Philippines. Mata Amritanandamayi Devi – better known as Amma or the hugging saint – has an ashram in unincorporated San Ramon and makes regular appearances in the area every year or so.

San Ramon man busted on drug, gun counts

A San Ramon man was arrested Thursday on multiple drug and weapons counts after a traffic stop by the California Highway Patrol in Sonora, Calif. Steven Schonert Noah, 32, and passenger Stephenie Rae Relva, 30, of Loomis, Calif. were arrested at about 10:25 p.m. Dec. 26 after a traffic stop on State Route 108.
